Way out here describes my approach to what I capture and create. This phrase reminds me to explore the depth of where I am, rural or elsewhere, and emphasize its originality no matter how unassuming. To be way out here is to give yourself distance, physically and mentallty, from the familiar or expected.

At the time, I was picturing this horse for a sale. The current owners saddled him up with lasso, bit and all to show any potential buyers that he is trained and well-mannered.

Deep sunsets soak the landscape and whoever roams it for much longer in the vast spaces of southwest KS.

Horses live in a matriarchal society and their herds are led by a strong female - the alpha mare. At the bottom of the pecking order is the omega with scars to prove it.

I've been amazed by the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Mosca, CO since I first found it on a trip to Pagosa Springs. Looking starting at the shadowed sand at the bottom leading into the lighted sand gives me the closest feeling to being there in person. It's now a stop I always make while on my way to the San Jaun mountains. If you're taking the southern route you should stop too.

Same cow as the Lakin Cow but edited over a white background. After taking this photo I immediately imagined it like this - A modern cow for a modern world.

Three beefers enjoying the winter wheat and endless scratching posts in the form of irrigator tires. An aerial view would show you circles upon circles (pivots) - A place for crops and cattle.

Taken at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Mosca, CO. Seeing this reminds me how multiple simple elements all togehter gives a photo depth.

The smaller elevator of the two in Lakin, KS. Living here I almost feel required to photograph grain elevators. They dot the landscape and sometimes are placed in the middle of nowhere. The feeling of obligation faded, and as you can see for yourself the worn utility and colors can be stunning.

About
Growing up in the country, I developed a connection to the quiet, expansive space and practiced photography by capturing the life that moved within it—the people, animals, and land.
